What is Vision Therapy?

Optometric Vision Therapy

Training the Visual System for Comfortable, Efficient Vision

Optometric vision therapy is a doctor-directed treatment program designed to improve how the eyes and brain work together. While glasses or contact lenses correct clarity, optometric vision therapy focuses on strengthening the visual skills needed for comfortable, efficient vision during reading, learning, and daily activities.

The visual system involves complex coordination between the eyes and the brain. When this coordination is not functioning efficiently, patients may experience symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, reading difficulty, or double vision.

Vision therapy is often compared to physical therapy for the visual system. Instead of strengthening muscles in the arms or legs, optometric vision therapy trains the coordination of the eyes and the visual pathways in the brain.

Optometric vision therapy uses structured visual activities and specialized equipment to improve these visual skills over time.

Conditions That May Benefit from

Optometric Vision Therapy

Optometric vision therapy may be recommended for patients with conditions such as:

Treatment plans are individualized based on the results of a comprehensive evaluation.

How Optometric

Vision Therapy Works

Vision therapy is conducted through a series of structured sessions designed to train and strengthen visual skills.

Programs may include:

Our therapy program combines in-office sessions with guided home activities to reinforce progress between visits.

What To Expect

Optometric vision therapy programs are individualized for each patient. The number of sessions depends on the specific visual condition and the goals of treatment.

Therapy is supervised by Dr. Vasilakos and guided by trained vision therapists using specialized equipment and carefully designed visual tasks.

Progress is monitored throughout the program to ensure improvement in visual skills and symptom relief.

Who May Be Referred for

Optometric Vision Therapy

Patients may be referred for optometric vision therapy by:

Parents and adult patients may also seek care when symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, double vision, or reading difficulties persist despite clear eyesight.

Optometric Vision Therapy

for Children and Adults

Children

Children may benefit from vision therapy when visual skills affect reading, learning, or sustained visual attention.

Adults

Adults may benefit from vision therapy when experiencing visual discomfort during reading, computer work, or following neurological injury such as concussion.

What Vision

Therapy Is Not

Optometric vision therapy should not be confused with general “eye exercises” or programs that claim to quickly improve eyesight.

Vision therapy is a structured medical treatment prescribed and monitored by a licensed optometrist.

It is also important to understand that vision therapy does not directly treat learning disabilities. However, when visual problems interfere with reading or other visual tasks, treating the underlying vision condition may make those tasks more comfortable and efficient.

When appropriate, collaboration with other professionals such as tutors, educational therapists, occupational therapists, or physical therapists may be recommended.

Evidence-Based Care

Optometric vision therapy is recognized by the American Optometric Association (AOA) as a treatment option for certain visual conditions affecting eye coordination, focusing, and binocular vision.  View Clinical Research in Optometric Vision Therapy

Treatment programs are individualized and carefully monitored to ensure that visual skills improve over time.
