Between the ages of 6 and 12 months, Dr. Vasilakos will provide your baby with a FREE vision and eye health assessment.
During the InfantSEE examination, Dr. Vasilakos will be answering the following questions of your child:
- Does the patient history suggest a problem?
- Can the baby see?
- Are the eyes straight?
- Are the eyes healthy?
- Is intervention necessary?
Why Is An Infant Visual Evaluation Necessary? Prevention!
Many visual and eye health issues are best addressed as early as possible to promote better outcomes.
During an InfantSEE assessment Dr. Laura will complete the following while your baby sits on one parent’s lap:
The ideal time for evaluating your baby’s eyes is when the infant is calm and relaxed. The evaluation takes approximately 30 minutes.
- A comprehensive patient history which includes any problems the parent may have noticed, visual and ocular history, general health history, family eye and medical history, and developmental history.
- Assess visual acuity by evaluating whether the infant can fixate on and follow an object, as well as identify which objects the baby prefers to look at and from what distances.
- Determine how clearly your baby can see by using special lenses and light from a small hand-held instrument to evaluate how the eye responds to specific targets.
- Using her hands, a light, or a toy, Dr. Laura will evaluate eye movement by how well your baby follows the movements of the object.
- By covering one eye at a time, Dr. Laura gathers valuable information about the eye muscles, including strabismus, which is a condition where the eyes do not align properly when looking at an object.
- Dr. Laura will thoroughly examine the eye’s structure along with an examination of the internal eye structures through a dilated pupil.
- Finally, in addition to sharing the findings with you, Dr. Laura sends a summary letter to your baby’s pediatrician.
Since InfantSEE began in 2005, more than 200,000 babies have received a comprehensive eye examination, as of 2024, through this public health program. A team of Optometrists and AOA leaders invested the time and resources to build this program The late President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn were also instrumental in supporting InfantSEE. They have two grandchildren with amblyopia, and recognized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to ensure that children can learn and grow to their full potential.
Your child could be at risk for visual issues if any of the following occurred during pregnancy or delivery:
- Prematurity, low birth weight, oxygen at birth
- Family history of eye diseases such as retinoblastoma, congenital cataracts, or metabolic or genetic disease
- Infection of mother during pregnancy (e.g., rubella, toxoplasmosis) or drug/alcohol use during pregnancy
- Sexually transmitted diseases, cytomegalovirus, or HIV
- Difficult or assisted labor, which may be associated with fetal distress or low Apgar scores
