Family Eyecare Solutions, an optometry practice specializing in vision therapy, myopia control, and post-concussion vision syndrome and led by Development Optometrist Laura Vasilakos, OD, FOVDR, was invited to give a presentation to Inly School in Scituate, MA.
Dr. Vasilakos generously donated her speaking fee for the 1-hour presentation to a local charity of Inly’s choice. Inly chose a local charity, Scituate Community Christmas, to receive the gift. Scituate Community Christmas supports Scituate families and individuals during times of hardship.
Inly School is an independent Montessori school that inspires toddlers through 8th grade on Boston’s south shore. Through the collaboration of Inly’s occupational therapist, Dr. Vasilakos educated over 25 teachers on the importance of vision and learning on December 6, 2024.
Dr. Vasilakos discussed about the myth of 20/20 and thinking that is perfect vision. She also educated the Inly teachers and staff that vision involves a complex interaction between the eyes, the brain, and other sensory and motor systems to enable you to recognize, understand, and respond to the world. She also shared tips of signs and symptoms of a vision problem in a child and what to do.
Family Eyecare Solutions offers a range of services, including developmental vision evaluations, visual information processing evaluations, evaluations for vision problems after a concussion, and myopia control options (to slow nearsightedness from getting worse) such as Ortho-K corneal reshaping contact lenses, multifocal soft contact lenses, and medicated eye drops. She also is an Infant SEE provider, offering complementary vision assessments for babies ages 6-12 months.
A former teacher, Dr. Vasilakos recognizes how vision problems can affect an individual’s ability to read, learn, and comprehend. While one in four children might suffer from double vision (despite having 20/20 eyesight), many end up being misdiagnosed as having ADHD or a similar condition. She also works with children and adults to help provide therapies to avoid strabismus surgery and provide alternatives to patching for “lazy eye.”
Dr. Vasilakos founded Family Eyecare Solutions in 2018, after recognizing a real need for these types of vision issues and a lack of providers who provided services that work to deal with these problems.
